Send a Piglet Home Program

Send a Piglet Home Program

Donate

Student with pigThe Send a Piglet Home Program provides a sustainable income opportunity for orphaned and vulnerable students at St. Denis Secondary School and their families. Through the Send a Piglet Home Program, the selected students learn pig-rearing skills, construct a piglet shelter, and receive supervision and support from a team of school staff who coordinate the program along with a veterinary officer. Since 2008, SAPH has provided training and piglets to 60 beneficiary students.

Once the piglets are mature, the female pigs will be bred with the hope of producing a litter of eight to ten piglets.  These piglets can be sold at the market to generate an income for the family.  The extra income will help families purchase needed household items such as mattresses, soap, clothing, and can help pay for school tuition fees.

The students receive their piglet with much joy and anticipation.  After training, each student builds a piglet shelter at their home with the help of community members.  Each month, school staff visit each student at their home to monitor the health of the piglet, the cleanliness of the shelter, and overall well-being of the student.  Piglets are routinely de-wormed and vaccinated to prevent the spread of disease.

We are happy to announce the birth of the first litters of piglets and we eagerly anticipate the arrival of many more.

Spotlight:  Nabakooza Mary and her mother, A Story of Hope

Nabakooza Mary's motherNabakooza Mary is a Send a Piglet Home beneficiary.  She was excited to receive her piglet because she knows what a difference this will make to her family.  Nabakooza's father is dead and she lives with her elderly grandmother and her disabled mother, Nantongo Paschazia.  Despite being a polio victim, Nantongo is determined to make life better for her children. Every day, her children push her wheelchair more than two miles to St. Denis SS where she sells food at her small stand.

Nabakooza Mary's mother in wheelchairThis family is an example of perpetual hope. Without the belief that tomorrow will be better, Nantongo and her children would likely give up the fight. The Send a Piglet Home Program, run through St. Denis SS and sponsored by Into Your Hands, has given Nabakooza a female piglet which will produce 8 to 10 piglets twice a year. By following her training in the care and breeding of their sow,  Nabakooza and her family will have a continual revenue stream from selling future piglets to help pay for basic household needs like soap, mattresses and clothing.
