Wish List 2013

Step 1:  Knowledge.  Sponsor a student.

Hands of Hope studentFor $360 a year, you can provide a youth with an education through our Hands of Hope Scholarship Program.  As a sponsor, your student will receive full tuition, school uniforms, and schools supplies; and you will receive regular updates from your student.  Our goal for 2013 is to continue to sponsor our 185 students.

Since so many of our students are graduating from St. Denis and moving on to Vocational Training, Upper Secondary, or University programs, we have added the Hands of Hope Higher Education Scholarship Program and the Hands of Hope University Scholarship Program.  The cost to sponsor one student through Higher Education is $720 per year. A University Scholarship is $1400 per year.  Only 2% of the population enrolls in university studies.  To find out more about our scholarship program, click here.  To sponsor a student, click here.

Step 2:  Entrepreneurship:  Send a Piglet and Send a Goat Home Program

Send a Piglet Home Program$300 will give an orphaned or disadvantaged youth a chance to start their own piggery or goat rearing business.  After completing a training program and building a shelter at their home, the students receive a female piglet or kid goat to rear.  Once the female is mature and delivers a litter, the new offspring are sold at the market for additional income which pays for household items such as mattresses, soap, clothing, food, and  school fees.  Our goal for 2013 is to provide pigs or goats along with training for 60 new students through the Send a Piglet and Goat Home Program.  Find out more about the Send a Piglet Home and Send a Goat Home Program, click here.  To sponsor a student through the Send a Piglet Home Program or Send a Goat Home Program, click here.

Step 3:  Community

Parents AssociaationThe St. Denis and Namabaale Parents Development Association, implemented by Into Your Hands-Africa staff member, Mukasa James, holds three parent education workshops per year.  Parents learn about improved farming techniques, agricultural business skills, food security, and healthy living education. These programs help to build up a healthy and empowered community who can support the well being of their children.  To make a donation to the Parents' Development Associations, click here.

Step 4:  Values

In 2013 Into Your Hands Africa is rolling out the first of four years of curriculum at St. Denis Secondary School.  This first year of courses will focus on healthy living which will include: puberty, sexual education, pregnancy, hygiene, personal health, and gender roles.  These basic life skills are not currently taught in school and are vital to the longevity of these youth.  This program was developed by Into Your Hands Africa, local community leaders and educators.  Other courses that are going to be developed are livelyhood training, entrepreneurship education, career counseling, goal setting and personal development.
